Toxic Effects of Pollutants on Plankton

چکیده

There are four main sources of aquatic pollution: industrial wastes, municipal wastes, agricultural run-off, and accidental spillage. Non-point sources, such as automobile exhausts, add appreciable amounts of pollutants to air that may enter aquatic systems in rainfall or dry fall-out. These sources add pesticides, heavy metals, oil, petroleum products, and a large number of organic and inorganic compounds to water. Lakesand oceans serveas sinks for many pollutants. Plankton comprise a large portion of the living matter in natural waters and function in biogeochemical cycles. They are affected by pollutants, transfer them to sediments and other organisms, and function in their biologicaltransformation. In natural waters, such as oceans, lakes, rivers, and swampsthe greatest amount of biological production is done by the smallest organisms, the plankton. These microscopic plants and animals comprise communities that drift aimlessly with tides and currents, yet they incorporate and cycle large amounts of energy that they pass on to higher trophic levels. Thus communities of plankton, as distinct as those of swamp, forest, or grassland, support other communities of aquatic species and man. In this chapter, pollution is considered as it affects plankton communities and species. Plankton (Gr. 'wandering') is a general term for those organismsthat drift or swim feebly in the surface water of ponds, lakes, streams, rivers, estuaries, and oceans. It is composed of organismswith chlorophyll (phytoplankton) and animals (zooplankton). Phytoplankton is the primary producer community and consists mainly of algae such as diatoms, dinoflagellates, and a variety of forms from other divisions of the plant kingdom. The zooplankton contains consumer species from

PhD Thesis - Responses of marine plankton to pollutant stress - Integrated community studies of structure and function

The thesis analyses effects of pollutants on natural plankton communities on the basis of three independent mesocosm experiments and a series of laboratory experiments performed in Denmark and Greenland. The work focus on integrating functional and structural measures of community responses to reveal indirect effects and co-effects with the abiotic environment on three trophic levels, namely ba...

Criteria air pollutants and toxic air pollutants.

This review presents a brief overview of the health effects and exposures of two criteria pollutants--ozone and particulate matter--and two toxic air pollutants--benzene and formaldehyde. These pollutants were selected from the six criteria pollutants and from the 189 toxic air pollutants on the basis of their prevalence in the United States, their physicochemical behavior, and the magnitude of...

Algal polyunsaturated fatty acids and effects on plankton ecology and other organisms

A review and discussion of the effects of algal polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on phytoplankton and zooplankton ecology and their effects on other animal systems. Topics discussed also include the relationship of cyanobacterial classification to PUFA occurrence, lipid concentrations occurring in the aqueous environment, the general effect of microalgae on zooplankton, and how algal PUFAs m...

In a nutshell: Microplastics and fisheries

Information of the ecological consequences of microplastic pollution is nascent; however, there is increasing evidence of direct and indirect effects associated with the ingestion by organisms and the toxic responses from inherent contaminants leaching from the microplastics and from extraneous pollutants that adhere to them (Cole et al. 2011; Teuten et al. 2009). The size of microplastics is e...

Plankton-toxin interaction with a variable input nutrient.

A simple model of phytoplankton-zooplankton interaction with a periodic input nutrient is presented. The model is then used to study a nutrient-plankton interaction with a toxic substance that inhibits the growth rate of plankton populations. The effects of the toxin upon the existence, magnitude, and stability of the periodic solutions are discussed. Numerical simulations are also provided to ...
